Cambodia was already devastated by a five-year civil war when, in 1975, the communist Khmer Rouge under their ruthless leader Pol Pot overtook the country. Citizens were forced to leave their homes and become peasants in the countryside; many others simply disappeared. Today, people are vibrant and possess the resilience to rebuild, yet the struggle is far from over.
