Fieldwork Supervisor for university-based
research project in rural Cambodia

PEPY, Cambodia, together with a research team of three principal investigators (PI) from the
Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany are looking for a
fieldwork supervisor for a joint research project on educational investment decisions, which is
funded by the German Science Foundation. The team will realize a randomized controlled trial
with ninth graders from rural lower secondary schools in North-West Cambodia. The fieldwork
supervisor will be hired for a period of six months (approx. Nov 2019 ‐ April 2020) for the preparation,
implementation and follow‐up of the field work. The fieldwork supervisor is expected to
work 50% in November and December 2019, 100% from January to March 2020 and 50% in April
2020. The fieldwork supervisor will be affiliated with PEPY during this period. PEPY is a locally
based Cambodian NGO who has expertise in actively empowering young Cambodians to reach
their potential.

Overview

Location: Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Oddar Meanchey, Pailin, Siem Reap
Schedule: November 2019 until April 2020, part-time in November and December 2019, full-time
in January and March 2020, part-time again in April 2020
Salary: monthly salary of 900 – 1,100 US-$, depending on experience (incl. health insurance and
1.5 days of paid holidays per month)

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing feedback for the research design
  • Translating fieldwork material
  • Organizing fieldwork, including its logistics
  • Supporting in the recruitment process of the research assistants
  • Supervising the research team (~approx. 8 research assistants) during training, piloting and intervention
  • Ensuring the quality of the collected data and all field work notes
  • Supporting PEPY with budgeting; ensuring accurate financial records
  • Communicating with the education ministry and local governments as well as the school principals and teachers of the participating schools
  • Gathering project relevant school statistics

Requirements

  • Fluent in English and Khmer (both written and verbally)
  • Bachelor or master degree in anthropology, sociology, economics, education, rural development or related fields
  • Excellent and proven leadership skills
  • At least 2 years of experience in conducting and supervising field work, ideally in rural Cambodia
  • Experience in working in teams and in communicating with local authorities
  • Experience in academic research and in research on education specifically is an asset
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and word; experience with survey software programs is an asset but not a requirement
  • Flexibility to travel and live in rural Cambodia for several weeks
